The Journeyman – Michael Baastrup Chang, 2011 Exhibition

The Journeyman was a solo exhibition by Michael Baastrup Chang at Cath Alexandrine Danneskiold-Samsøe Gallery, Copenhagen, June 21 – August 20, 2011. The show combined graphite, beeswax, egg tempera, and printmaking to explore appropriation, materiality, and process.

Works included the series Appropriation, layering graphite and beeswax over reproductions of Munch, Warhol, Bacon, and Goya, highlighting the color black and echoing minimalist traditions. Other pieces ranged from monochrome egg tempera paintings with polished surfaces to participatory works like a multi-panel blackboard inviting public mark-making.

Critics noted Chang’s engagement with art history, his experimental use of printing presses, and his dialogue with minimalism and process art. The exhibition also featured Folds, a series of folded Somerset paper works developed during a residency at Crown Point Press in San Francisco.
