Michael Baastrup Chang uses the proportions of his own body for all the works in his solo exhibition at Cath Alexandrine Danneskiold-Sams&oslah;e Gallery, Bredgade, Copenhagen.
From 21 June to 20 August 2011, works by Danish painter Michael Baastrup Chang (b. 1973) can be experienced at Cath Alexandrine Danneskiold-Sams&oslah;e Gallery in Bredgade, Copenhagen.
Michael Baastrup Chang is a kind of Dogme painter who creates his own self-imposed constraints.
One of the artist’s rules is to use only a single colour per painting. In this way, the focus shifts from the painting’s motif to its material qualities.
All works in the exhibition take their point of departure in the artist’s own bodily dimensions. Some pieces are executed in a 1:5 scale, while others are based on the proportions of the artist’s hands.
The idea behind the proportions of the works is that they should appeal physically to the viewer. The works are not necessarily meant to be understood but rather sensed. In his process, Chang bends his own rules — for example, by creating a series of works in folded paper.
One of the works, entitled Y, consists of four panels measuring the artist’s height and arm span in width. With this work, Chang invites visitors to add their own words, drawings or graffiti to the panels using chalk.
Other works are executed with chalk and homemade egg tempera made from pasteurised eggs.
In the words of art critic Trine Ross, Chang works: “... with a kind of further development of 1960s minimalism, where the material itself is placed at the centre with an intensity that may verge on the naughty – in the best possible way!”
