5 catalogue texts

This collection brings together five catalogue texts written about Michael Baastrup Chang’s work between 2009 and 2020 by the curators, writers and art critics Melissa E. Feldman and Trine Ross.

The texts were written at different points in the development of Chang’s artistic practice and accompany exhibitions and projects ranging from his early monochrome paintings and printmaking to later work involving egg tempera, materials, colour and memory.

Foreword

I first met Trine in my Frederiksberg studio in the autumn of 2008. I remember that it was raining. Trine drew inspiration for the text she later wrote about my monochromes from an oak tree in the courtyard outside my studio, and from the way the autumn rain outlined the tree’s contours on the paving stones.

I met Melissa in the summer of 2009 at Crown Point Press in San Francisco, where I produced a series of aquatints. We talked about my work. I was at the beginning of my career, and it was very valuable to receive feedback that gave me an international perspective on my work.

Between my work and the texts of these two writers there is a concordance, a kind of resonance. I am very grateful for their insights.

Archive Context

The catalogue texts preserved here span more than a decade of Michael Baastrup Chang’s artistic practice. They document the development of his work through different materials, methods and ideas, while also recording how his practice was understood by writers and curators at particular moments in time.

The first two texts were written in 2009, at a point when Chang’s practice was moving from figurative painting towards abstraction and monochrome painting. Melissa E. Feldman’s Everyman accompanied the artist’s work produced at Crown Point Press in San Francisco, while Trine Ross’s Rejected addressed the relationship between selection, rejection, material and artistic development.

Feldman returned to Chang’s work in 2011 with Regarding The Journeyman, while Ross’s The Artist As Gardener followed in 2012. In 2020 Ross wrote Colours Collected From A Childhood, considering memory, colour and the copperplate prints that became part of Colours Collected From A Childhood.

The individual texts are preserved as separate archival records so that their authorship, dates, accompanying works, publications and historical contexts can be documented independently.
